Both Sides, Now

March 31, 2009

I recently got my hair cut and decided to get bangs. I've had bangs in the past -- actually for most my life -- but this time I wanted the whole look to be sleek and sophisticated. I got that and more. Not only is it sleek, but the cut can take me from beatnik to boho chic to sexy modern in mere minutes. All I have to do is make a quick wardrobe change, and I'm sporting a new look and feel!

The inspiration for my new found style is someone I was told I now resemble.

Joni Mitchell's style, especially in this photo, is kind of reminiscent of the beatnik look. Yet, her other look was often very bohemian. Here are two looks that match these styles and another one that bridges the two together in a more modern and sexy way.

Moroccan Chic

March 18, 2009

Another great trend for this season, and one that has come and gone over the years, is the exotic yet laid-back Moroccan/safari-ish look. This fashion trend is all about color, unique detailing and relaxed fabrics. It invokes a somewhat Bohemian feel, but is more grounded in a utilitarian vibe -- great for looking effortless but still put together.

And even though the designers' looks are made from expensive fabrics with handcrafted details, this trend can be easily duplicated for a lot less.

The Dichotomy of Dressing

March 6, 2009

Over the last few years, there has been a trend towards two completely opposite styles -- the structured look verse the amorphous look. Both have had their time in the spotlight, but this year it seems the designers have managed to meld the two into a look that is unique and daring.

They've taken the fluidity of ruffles and chiffon and structured them as pleats and origami-like constructions. The outcome is a style that oozes sophistication and will always make anyone wearing it chic -- bargain price or not.
