Strum a Little Tune, Spread a Little Joy

August 26, 2014

My new Kala KA-S ukulele
So, yeah. I realize it has been over four months since my last post, and, well, the truth of it is that I've been preoccupied with other things. Poetry, travel, work, and daydreaming - lots and lot of daydreaming. My calendar has been pretty full, no?

Okay, enough excuses. It's time for me to get back in the saddle, get back on the wagon (um, wait, that's the wrong euphemism), get back on track (much better) and reinvigorate this old/new blog with some fresh and fun material.

And what isn't more fun than a ukulele?...
Uh - dare I say nothing. Not only does its bright, cheerful strums make you feel as if you've been transported to a tropical paradise, playing it instantly puts a smile on your face, a giggle in your voice, and a twinkle in your eye. They're a pretty effortless instrument, and once you've mastered a few chords, you can set off on an adventure of silly songs and merry tunes to entertain the masses (or maybe just yourself).

Kind of like this...

So, now that you've seen all the fun you can have with a ukulele, I bet you can't wait to go out and buy one. Well, first, let me tell you some basics before you do so. First, there are four types of ukes: soprano, classical, tenor and baritone. I've read that for beginners the soprano is the best one to get. However, it really just depends on your size preference and the kind of sound you'd like to hear from it. A great resource for all-things uke is a website called Ukulele Hunt - it has reviews, tips and advice, along with chords and tabs and instructional videos.

Once you've decided on the type of uke, now you've got to go out and find one. I'd say the average cost of a decently constructed new soprano uke can range anywhere from $50 to $70. Some of the reasonably priced but quality brands are Kala and Lanikai. You can find them on Amazon and most music stores (e.g. Guitar Center), as well as used and new ones on Ebay or maybe even Craig's List. I, however, stumbled upon a gem of a place online called Sweetwater. It's based out of Fort Wayne, IN, but you can purchase all sorts of musical instruments and audio supplies on their website - and it has super reasonable prices, free delivery, and amazing customer service.

Now go forth and spread a little joy and make life a little more fun.

Cheers,
TeeKay
