Happy Holidays!

December 24, 2008

I want to wish everyone a very, merry Christmas and a happy Hanukkah. And, of course a wonderful, healthy and prosperous New Year. See you in 2009.

If Santa Were a Fashionista...

December 20, 2008

Then he'd understand why these would be the ultimate Christmas gifts...

Chanel Suit from Spring 2009 Read-to-Wear Collection (price unknown, but I'm pretty sure it's very, very, very expensive.)

Christian Louboutin Trotte Avec Moi Black Buckle Boots (These suckers are hard to find, especially in black... I could only find them in brown @ net-a-porter.com for $1,445)

But, since Santa and his elves are on a budget this year, as is the rest of the country, I will settle for the just as glamorous and easier-on-the-wallet looks inspired by the real thing...

Evening's Promise Dress, Anthropologie, $158; Cala Lily Cafe Sweater Dress, Mod Cloth, $74.99

BR Monogram Bow-Tie Pleated Blouse, Banana Republic, $99.99; Sash-Tied Blouse, Newport News, $39

Metropolis Bolero in Black, Mod Cloth, $74.99; White Mt. Women's Celebration Boot, Endless.com, $69.90

An Existential Fashion Dilemma

December 12, 2008

To be, or not to be fashionable. That is the question. Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the lace and baubles of outrageous fashions, or to bare arms (or legs) against a see of colors and by opposing, end them... to die of fashion melt-down; to sleep in a fashion rut, yet to dream of cashmere and ruffles. Ah, there's the rub!

Ah, yes, there is the rub indeed! Just like Hamlet's famous soliloquy, I, too, had a moment of indecisive self-reflection. The other morning I stood in my closet with a profound annoyance that I could not figure out what to wear. For the next half-hour, I sifted through tops and pants, trying on varying combinations of both. Like the woman in the bluefly.com commercials, who seemingly has nothing to wear and thus decides to go commando, I had a similar moment of wanting to shuffle off my mortal coil. I finally acquiesced to an outfit, but with a quiet (okay, who am I kidding, a slightly loud and garish) proclamation that I must update my wardrobe!

Because it is Christmas time, and much thought is given to buying for others, I find it hard to purchase things for myself. But, since sales are plentiful, I figured what better time than now to seek out some great finds. Perusing the Web has left me feeling more hopeful towards a slightly less pathetic and no more naked-inducing closet.

First, is a bit of an inspirational outfit from Banana Republic. Some of the elements can be worn for work and some for weekends, and most certainly any other occasion. Together, the outfit can be a bit pricey (about $540), but the top is the essential piece that is affordable, and the rest can either be found in your closet or bought at more reasonably priced retail stores like Gap, Old Navy or Target. The rest of the items are tops that evoke the spirit of the inspiration piece -- quirky, bold looks that have a splash of class... kind of what Bargain Chic is all about!

Gift Guide for the Hard to Find

November 30, 2008

Oh, yes! And, oh, no! It's gift-giving time -- Christmas is only 25 days away, and that means less than a month to do some major shopping. So, okay, maybe you've already started shopping. Maybe you're like my mom, who can start shopping for the holidays in July. Or, perhaps, you're more of a last-minute kind of shopper. I personally fall in between the two -- after Thanksgiving I start "thinking" about gifts and then start my hard core shopping the first or second week in December. This year, however, I've made a decision to do most of my shopping on line. Not only will it save on gas (points for being green!), but I also won't have to deal with the crowds. Here are a few gift ideas from some cool Web sites that offer unique stuff at great prices. Happy Holiday Shopping!

Happy Thanksgiving!

November 26, 2008

On a day where we give thanks for the goodness in our lives, I thought it would be appropriate to express my gratitude for the things I am thankful for. Neither shoes nor the perfect dress, the best bargain or the last minute deals, are what makes me thankful. It's what some may think of as insignificant or mundane -- the simple things in life that we all take for granted. Music, children's laughter, a fresh pot of coffee, the unconditional love from a dog, clean air, unexpected compliments, pickles, my faith, recycling, John Cusack movies, nonconformists, happy hour, apple pie... and the list can go on and on.

But above all, I am most thankful for the one thing that inspires me to be a better person: HOPE. More importantly, the ability to hope, to hope for things that can make our lives and those around us better. And this year in particular, all of us in America and around the world were given a chance to see what that little word can do for the spirit of humanity. We witnessed for the first time in American history two women and a black man break barriers and give everyone a sense of hope that no matter who you are, where you come from or what color your skin is, you can be anything you hope for. And for that, I am immensely thankful.

Favorite Stores: Part 2

November 20, 2008

Although I don't frequent these stores as often as I should, The Limited, N.Y. & Co. and Express are definitely the menage a trois of fashion frugality.

They have the foundation of basics, but are able to capture the newest trends and styles from the runways. And, they offer it all at a price that 20- and 30-year old women professionals can afford.

Here are just a sampling of what they offer. You can mix and match just about all of the pieces, and all of them are under $70. What's better than that?!

The Limited

Belted Shirtdress, $69.50; Quilted Satin Tote, $54.50

Colorblock Blouse, $49.50; Draped Satin Skirt, $69.50

New York & Company

City Style Striped Cardigan, $36.95; City Style Button-Down Shirt w/ Bow, $34.95

Collection Woven Paper Bag Skirt, $48

Express

Buckle-Cuff Mock-Neck Sweater, $29.50; Stella Bootcut Jean, $69.50

Favorite Stores: Part 1

November 15, 2008

I've decided to catalog some of my favorite stores for my fellow Bargain Chic readers. These are places that I think offer stylish clothes at reasonable prices. I may also throw in some higher-end stores, but most of those will be for their awesome sales.

My first pick is Ann Taylor LOFT. I love this store! Some seasons it is hit and miss there, but more often than not they have great deals on clothes that are classic and sophisticated. I have to admit, most of the clothes in my closet have the Ann Taylor LOFT label on them, but what can I say -- I love a bargain chic find!

What's even better is that Ann Taylor LOFT always has tons of sale items. So, if one day you really fall in love with something but just can't afford it right then, check back a few weeks later, and I'll guarantee you it'll be on sale. And, to boot, they also have tons of promotions for discounts and coupons.

Here are just a few looks that epitomize why I love the LOFT so much.

Election Day Party Dress

November 2, 2008

Whether you're from a blue state or a red state, this Tuesday will be a historic day for our country. And whatever your political persuasion, the excitement of it all deserves to be celebrated. So, what better way to do that than have a party for your party! If you're a tried and true red-stater or a bold and brazen blue-stater, check out these party dresses that will wow any party!

The Season For Bargains

October 26, 2008

I think I can officially say that the beginning of the holiday season has begun and with it comes sales, sales and more sales! It seems every department store, retail store and boutique is having bigger and better sales than ever before. Granted, this also could be directly related to the country's economic downturn, but for me it means finding chic fashion at bargain prices. Here are a few great deals that I picked up this weekend.

Short-sleeve blazer, Banana Republic, $39.99

Green shawl collar blouse, Banana Republic, $17.99

Sweater-coat, Ambition, Macy's, $52.80

Mad About Plaid

October 18, 2008

Of the many trends that have come and gone for the Fall and Winter seasons, the one that always finds its way back to us is PLAID. Whether it be a plaid skirt, a vest, a dress, or even a shirt (remember grunge?), plaid has made its way onto nearly every piece of clothing over the last few decades. Sometimes it has worked; and, sometimes it hasn't.

This season, however, it does work, and plaid is more sophisticated than ever. It's all about the cut, the shape and the style. Here are two looks that take the plaid trend and mixes it with a classic pea coat to create a chic and modern look that will last for decades to come.
